Living with Type 1: A Journey of Resilience and Self-Kindness

It's World Diabetes Day, y'all!

And let me tell you—until eight years ago, I had no clue this day even existed. That is, until life came at me fast, and I found myself in a hospital room, hearing: "You have Type 1 diabetes."

Now, let me set the scene: one day, I’m out here eating whatever I want, just living my best carb-loving life, and the next, I’m being handed an insulin pen and a crash course in counting carbs. I thought Type 1 was something only kids got, so hearing that diagnosis felt like stepping into the Twilight Zone. And to make things extra wild? I was in grad school at the time, with exams and deadlines piling up. So instead of slowing down and processing what my body needed, I was just trying to check out of the hospital and get back to studying. Health wasn’t even on my radar, which, looking back, is wild but real.

 

But reality has a way of catching up. The more I learned about diabetes, the more anxious I got. I wanted to avoid every potential complication, so I went into overdrive, trying to manage every single detail—food, numbers, routines. I was so focused on “not messing up” that I lost sight of actually living my life.

Fast forward a bit, and I had to find another way—a way to be kind to myself through this journey. At some point, I realized I couldn’t keep going like that. I wasn’t going to get this diabetes thing perfect every single day. And that’s okay. This is my life, and I get to decide how I live it—even with diabetes along for the ride. Slowing down didn’t come naturally to me as a busy professional, but I learned to make space for what I needed to feel balanced. And if that’s you—navigating diabetes with a full plate of responsibilities—

Here are a few strategies that might help ease the pressure:

1. Reframe Negative Thoughts

Getting a diagnosis like this can send your mind spinning. Instead of letting negative thoughts take over, try to see it as a chance to start fresh with some new habits. Diabetes doesn’t define you; it’s just one part of your story.

2. Acknowledge What You’re Feeling

Sadness, frustration, anger—they’re all valid. Letting yourself feel whatever comes up allows you to process it, so it doesn’t weigh you down. You don’t have to put on a brave face 24/7.

3. Take it One Day at a Time

Diabetes is a long game. Taking it one step, one day at a time helps you avoid feeling overwhelmed by all the details. Do what you can today, and let tomorrow handle itself.

4. Do What Makes You Happy

Yes, diabetes comes with a lot of management, but it doesn’t have to take over. Find time to enjoy what you love—whether it’s a favorite hobby or just kicking back with friends. Don’t let diabetes define your happiness.

5. Loop in Your Healthcare Provider

Don’t try to do it all on your own. Your healthcare team is there to help you figure things out, support you, and help keep you on track. Leaning on them is part of taking care of yourself.

Find Your Community

Surrounding yourself with people who get it can make all the difference. Many local hospitals offer support groups where you can meet others living with diabetes, share experiences, and pick up practical tips. Plus, Facebook has an abundance of diabetes support groups—you can easily find a community that fits your vibe, whether you're looking for advice, encouragement, or just a place to vent.
